General Motors Company (GM) founded by William "Billy" Durant on September 16, 1908 and is one of the world’s largest automakers. OPERATION
General Motors operates in five segments: GM North America (GMNA), GM Europe (GME), GM International Operations (GMIO), GM South America (GMSA) and GM Financial.
GM produces cars, trucks and parts under the brand names Baojun, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Daewoo, Holden, Opel, Isuzu, Vauxhall, Jiefang, FAW, and Wuling and sells them worldwide. The company sells its cars and trucks to dealers for consumer retail sales, as well as to fleet customers, including daily rental car companies, commercial fleet customers, leasing companies, and governments. GM’s OnStar subsidiary provides vehicle safety, security, and information services. GME has sales, manufacturing and distribution operations across Western and Central Europe.
GM Financial is an automotive finance company. GM Financial purchases automobile finance contracts for new and used vehicles purchased by consumers primarily from franchised and select independent dealerships. GM Financial offers financing to consumers who are unable to obtain financing from more traditional sources. GM Financial services its loan portfolio at regional centers using automated loan servicing and collection systems. GM Financial finances its loan origination volume through the use of credit facilities and securitization trusts that issue asset-backed securities to investors.
General Motors established the GM Foundation (GMF) in 1976 to ensure continuity of its philanthropic efforts. The GMF is committed to supporting organizations and programs designed to affect and improve the quality of life in communities. The GMF supports a variety of activities in four major areas: education, health and human services, environment and energy, and community development. Financial support from the General Motors Foundation is enabling the American Red Cross to purchase supplies and rush disaster relief services to communities affected by the Tennessee and Kentucky floods. When disaster strikes, the Red Cross mobilizes volunteers and supplies into affected areas to shelter, feed and provide emotional support to disaster victims and emergency personnel.
